Tailim Packaging and Tailim Paper sign an MOU to “establish and expand an independent recycling system for paper resources”

  • Agreement reached with CJ Logistics and SK ecoplant to recycle paper waste by developing, producing and using eco-friendly boxes
  • Secure competitiveness as a company with innovative ESG management through the establishment of an independent recycling system for paper resources

[2023.05.15] As Korea’s leading producer of corrugated cardboard packaging materials, Tailim Packaging and Tailim Paper is looking to contribute to the nation’s drive to expand eco-friendly packaging by producing boxes made from recycled waste paper.

On May 15, Tailim Packaging and Tailim Paper announced that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with CJ Logistics and SK ecoplant to “establish and expand an independent recycling system for paper resources.”

The aim of this agreement is to create a cyclical system where paper waste generated at CJ Logistics distribution centers are collected and compressed by SK ecoplant, and then received by Tailim to be reproduced into paper and boxes.

Over two weeks the three companies carried out a successful production test of the industry’s first-ever cyclical system.

The industry expects that the introduction of recycled boxes produced through this cyclical system will not only help alleviate the issue of waste paper accumulation but also have a significant impact on resource conservation and reduction of carbon emissions.

According to the Ministry of Environment, 150,000 tons of waste paper was accumulated in the country in the second half of last year. This is twice the usual amount of 70,000 to 80,000 tons and is a result of decreased domestic and international demand for waste paper due to the economic downturn and China’s refusal to import waste materials.

The recycled boxes have been designed in consideration of recycling after use. To minimize ink usage only one color is used on the outer surface of the boxes, and written on it is guidance saying “recycled boxes produced through resource circulation (Closed Loop Recycling)”, which is added to enhance the eco-friendly image.

A representative from Tailim said, “The establishment of this resource circulation system will promote a transition from a linear economic structure, where products are consumed and discarded, to a circular economic structure through remanufacturing. It will serve as an opportunity for us to secure competitiveness as a company with innovative ESG management. We plan to expand the circulation system in collaboration with various customers in the future.”

Tailim Packaging, which is an enterprise that has an integrated paper-manufacturing and packaging system with its subsidiary Tailim Paper, is the market leader in the corrugated paper, material, and box sectors in Korea. Under the motto of “Leading ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Management,” all employees are committed to creating a sustainable Tailim. The company has obtained international environmental certifications such as ISO 14001, the highest level of environmental certification, and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for environmentally friendly forestry.
